A data layer includes all of the information that you want to pass to Google Tag Manager. Information like events or variables can be passed to GTM via the data layer, and triggers can be set up based on the values of variables or based on the specific events.

Sometimes you may run into the problem that the data layer provides you with the right information, but not in a format you could use.
